Product Description

Magnesium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgO. It is an oxide of magnesium and an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is the raw material for magnesium smelting. Magnesium oxide has high fire-resistant and insulating properties. It can be transformed into crystals after being burned at a high temperature of more than 1000°C, and it becomes dead-burned magnesium oxide (magnesia) or sintered magnesium oxide when the temperature rises to 1500-2000°C. Magnesium oxide is an alkaline oxide and has the common properties of alkaline oxides. It belongs to a cementitious material.

Properties

Magnesium oxide is an alkaline oxide with the common properties of alkaline oxides and belongs to gelling materials. It is a white or off-white powder, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. It is a typical alkaline earth metal oxide with the chemical formula MgO. The melting point is 2852℃, the boiling point is 3600℃, and the density is 3.58g/cm3 (25℃). It is soluble in acid and ammonium salt solutions, but insoluble in alcohol. The solubility in water is 0.00062 g/100 mL (0 °C) and 0.0086 g/100 mL (30 °C). When exposed to air, it easily absorbs water and carbon dioxide and gradually becomes basic magnesium carbonate. The light product is faster than the heavy product. It combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide under certain conditions, and has a slightly alkaline reaction. The pH of the saturated aqueous solution is 10.3. It is soluble in acid and ammonium salts but difficult to dissolve in water. Its solution is alkaline. It is insoluble in ethanol. It has strong refraction in the visible and near-ultraviolet light range. Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3·CaCO3) and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide is obtained by thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite. Magnesium hydroxide precipitate is obtained by treating seawater with slaked lime, and magnesium hydroxide is burned to obtain magnesium oxide. Magnesium chloride brine blocks obtained from the comprehensive utilization of seawater or brine after bromine extraction can also be used as raw materials, and sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate is added to generate magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate precipitate, which is then burned to obtain magnesium oxide. China mainly uses magnesite, dolomite, brine or brine blocks as raw materials

Characteristics

1.High Purity: Ensures consistent and reliable performance across applications.

2.Good Reactivity: Ideal for chemical processes requiring rapid interaction.

3.Thermal Stability: Excellent resistance to high temperatures.

4.Low Impurities: Minimal levels of heavy metals and other contaminants.

5.Fine Particle Size: Optimized for homogeneous mixing and distribution.

Advantages

1. Superior quality sourced from premium magnesite ore.

2. Reliable performance in demanding industrial applications.

3. Cost-effective and environmentally friendly production process.

4. Long shelf life due to low moisture absorption.

5. High adaptability for various industrial processes.

Applications

Magnesium Oxide (Direct Method) is widely used in the following industries:

1.Construction Materials:

Production of magnesium-based cement and refractory materials.

2.Agriculture:

Soil amendment and pH adjustment in acidic soils.

3.Rubber & Plastics:

As a filler and reinforcement agent in rubber compounds.

4.Chemicals:

Used as a raw material for producing magnesium salts.

5.Environmental:

Water treatment and flue gas desulfurization.

6.Ceramics:

Used in high-temperature ceramic and glass production.

Production Technology

The direct method involves the calcination of natural magnesite ore at high temperatures. The ore undergoes thermal decomposition to release carbon dioxide, leaving behind magnesium oxide. The production process ensures high reactivity, low impurities, and consistent particle size distribution.

Reaction Equation:MgCO3→HeatMgO+CO2text{MgCO}_3 xrightarrow{text{Heat}} text{MgO} + text{CO}_2

Theory

Magnesium Oxide exhibits a strong affinity for moisture and carbon dioxide, forming magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate upon reaction. This makes it an effective material for applications requiring reactivity and absorption capabilities. Its thermal stability and basic nature also allow it to function as a refractory and neutralizing agent.
